  • Books
General rules for travelling with children:
  • If possible, choose flights with the least number of changes
  • Prepare the child for the flight by explaining to them, step by step, what’s going to happen in the airport before the flight, and during the flight. Try to tell a funny or interesting story about travelling by plane,
  • Entertain the children while waiting at the airport by observing departing/arriving ‘planes, looking at shop displays, reading a book or playing a simple games,
  • Once on board, remember that taking off and landing are the two worst moments for the child as the air pressure changes can be painful in their ears. It’s worth giving them something to drink, suck or chew at these times. For infants, it’s best to put them on the breast or bottle.
  • Newborns younger than one week can NOT travel by ‘plane due to their weaker respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
  • Discounts for children: Usually, children between 10 and 12 (depending on the airline) are entitled to a 33% discount on the basic rate; Infants up to 2 years can get a 90% discount, though they are usually not entitled to a separate seat on the plane and must travel on the lap of their parent or carer (this is also safer too). Older children may travel alone, but it is often necessary to pay extra for on-board care. Written permission will also be needed, stating that an adult person indicated by the parents will be waiting for the child at the airport of their destination.
Children’s Food and Drinks

Food and drinks for children to be consumed during the journey do not have to be packed in plastic bags, but must still undergo Safety Control.

Prams and push-chairs
  • Folding push-chairs can be taken on board the aircraft. After boarding, please hand them to a flight attendant (they will be returned immediately upon leaving the plane).
  • Prams can also be checked-in with your main luggage. In these cases, please ensure it is properly bound and secured.
Choosing the seat on a plane
Persons travelling with a child can ask at the luggage check-in for a seat at the front as there is usually more space in the front rows. It is easier to extend one’s legs, put safety seats on the floor or let babies play on the floor.
