- Entertain the children while waiting at the airport by observing departing/arriving ‘planes, looking at shop displays, reading a book or playing a simple games,
- Once on board, remember that taking off and landing are the two worst moments for the child as the air pressure changes can be painful in their ears. It’s worth giving them something to drink, suck or chew at these times. For infants, it’s best to put them on the breast or bottle.
- Newborns younger than one week can NOT travel by ‘plane due to their weaker respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
- Discounts for children: Usually, children between 10 and 12 (depending on the airline) are entitled to a 33% discount on the basic rate; Infants up to 2 years can get a 90% discount, though they are usually not entitled to a separate seat on the plane and must travel on the lap of their parent or carer (this is also safer too). Older children may travel alone, but it is often necessary to pay extra for on-board care. Written permission will also be needed, stating that an adult person indicated by the parents will be waiting for the child at the airport of their destination.
