Documents Required at Border Crossings

For crossing internal borders, passengers are requested to carry appropriate valid documents. According to law, Polish citizens may cross the borders of any EU member states by presenting eithera passport or an identity card:
The Act of the 7th of September 2007 concerning the temporary use of identity cards issued before the 1st of January 2001 (Journal of Laws No. 191, Item 1363) limited the function of a paper-book identity card exclusively to confirming the identity and Polish citizenship of its holder.
Therefore, since the 1st of January 2008, paper-book identity cards no longer allow the crossing of borders of EU member states, borders of EEC countries not belonging to the EU, or borders of countries that are not parties of the EEC agreement but whose citizens may exercise free movement on the basis of the agreements that those countries have made with the EC and its member states that accept this document as entitlement to cross their borders, (as stated in Art No. 1, Point 3 of the Act of the 10th of April 1974 concerning the registry of population and identity cards (Journal of Laws of 2006 No. 139, Item 993 with subsequent amendments).
Citizens of EU member States, the EEC and other states which are not members of the EU but do exersize the free movement of persons on the basis of agreements made with the EU, are allowed to enter the territory of the Republic of Poland upon presentation of a valid travel document or other document confirming their identity and citizenship.
Legal bases: The regulations of the Act of the 14th of July 2006 concerning the entering, staying in and leaving of the territory of the Republic of Poland by citizens of EU member states and their families (Journal of Laws No.144, Item 1043 with subsequent amendments).
